Boiler Inspection

NDTS provides comprehensive non-destructive testing (NDT) and inspection services for Cleaver Brooks boilers utilized in various San Miguel Brewery facilities. Periodic inspections are systematically conducted across multiple brewery sites, including San Fernando Brewery, Polo Brewery, Mandaue Brewery, Bacolod Brewery, and Davao Brewery, ensuring consistent equipment reliability and operational safety.

The scope of inspection involves the application of several advanced NDT techniques, including Ultrasonic Testing (UT) for thickness measurement and flaw detection, Hardness Testing for material integrity assessment, Metallographic Examination for microstructural analysis, and Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) for surface discontinuity detection. These evaluations are performed in accordance with recognized industry standards and San Miguel Brewery’s maintenance protocols, supporting proactive asset management, optimizing boiler performance, and minimizing unplanned downtime.

Gantry Crane Inspection

On August 19, 2019, during the height of a severe storm, an RTG (Rubber-Tired Gantry) Crane at Subic Bay International Terminal Corporation (SBITC) collided with a berthing vessel due to strong winds and heavy waves.

A comprehensive structural damage assessment was carried out to evaluate the extent of the impact. The inspection covered critical components of the crane—including the boom, railings, fore stays, mast supports, legs, and portals—using various Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques. The assessment incorporated metal fatigue and brittle fracture analyses to identify potential material weaknesses.

Further, structural modeling and stability analysis were performed to verify the crane’s overall integrity and ensure its safety, stability, and readiness for continued operation.

Smoke Stack Inspection

NDT Science & Technologies Inc. (NDTS) has been conducting annual non-destructive testing (NDT) inspections of smoke stacks across various Nestlé Philippines facilities, including Wyeth, Lipa, Tanauan, Cabuyao, and Cagayan de Oro (CDO). The program aims to assess the residual strength, material integrity, and overall structural safety of the smoke stacks to ensure their continued reliability in operation.

A combination of NDT techniques is employed, including ultrasonic thickness gauging to determine wall loss and corrosion levels, magnetic particle testing and liquid penetrant testing to detect surface cracks, and visual inspection to identify deformation or deterioration. The collected data serve as vital input for stress–strain and stability analyses, providing a clear picture of each stack’s current condition and serviceability.

This ongoing inspection initiative forms part of Nestlé’s preventive maintenance and safety assurance program, reinforcing the company’s commitment to equipment reliability, structural integrity, and compliance with industry standards.

Failure Analysis of Rotor Shaft

On January 15, 2015, one company experienced an unexpected production stoppage due to the failure of a crushing rotor shaft, resulting in unscheduled downtime. Although the machine was equipped with an overload protection system, it exhibited an unusually low current reading, prompting engineering personnel to conduct an immediate inspection. Subsequent troubleshooting revealed that the shaft of one of the meshing rotors in the malt crushing machine had failed and sheared.

The NDT Science & Technologies Inc. (NDTS) team was engaged to perform a failure investigation and implement an engineering solution to prevent recurrence. Using a combination of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods and root cause analysis, NDTS identified the contributing factors and developed corrective measures to enhance the rotor’s reliability and performance.

Since the implementation of the recommended solution, there have been no further reports or incidents of rotor shaft failure, demonstrating the effectiveness and long-term stability of the corrective action.

Pipeline Inspection

On August 8, 2023, NDT Science & Technologies Inc. was engaged to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the penstock pipelines for CBK Power Company Ltd. located in Kalayaan, Laguna. The objective of the inspection was to evaluate the structural integrity and safety of the penstock system, including its saddles and concrete supports.

A variety of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques were employed, such as ultrasonic weld examination, phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) for flaw and defect detection, and liquid penetrant testing (PT) for identifying surface discontinuities.

In addition, a technical evaluation and safety analysis were performed to assess the overall condition of the penstock and to provide recommendations for maintaining its operational reliability and long-term performance.
